As part of measures to ensure the successful fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in the Effia-Kwesimintim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) of the Western Region, the Smile For Change, a non-governmental and non-for-profit organization in Takoradi has distributed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s) to market women in the Municipality.
The items mainly alcohol-based hand sanitizers, liquid soaps and locally made face masks numbering about one thousand in all were distributed to market women at the newly created Jubilee Market.
Speaking at the presentation, Madam Eunice Akesi Ussher, Executive Director of the organization disclosed that Smile For Change exists to implement policies and projects that seek the total welfare of women and children while empowering local communities.
She explained that the donation forms part of the organization’s social responsibility and to encourage the women to adhere to good personal hygiene principles, especially in public places as instructed by President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
According to her, the organization strives to provide strategies to help women and children to overcome their barriers to life, whether they are geographical, economic or social, so that they are able to fully access and benefit from health services and empowerment initiatives.
Madam Ussher commended the market women for observing the social distancing protocols and urged them to do their best to keep to it.
According to her, the protocols which include regular hand washing with soap under running water, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, avoiding hand shaking, social distancing and avoiding crowded places were the surest way to control the spread of the virus.
The market women upon receiving the items commended the organization for their support and promised to encourage their colleagues to use the items in order to help stem the spread of the disease.
He also called on all residents in the metropolis and the region to abide by all the directives issued by both the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the central government to curtail the spread of the virus so that things will be normalized in the country.
