Operations of Future Global Resources, formerly known as Golden Star Resources Limited, has been close down temporarily until the security situation improves following a protest by the youth of Dumasi on the company’s premises.
The Dumasi community youth in the Prestea Huni Valley in the early hours of Tuesday, went to the site to protest and vandalized properties belonging to the company.
The youth set the company’s digital security post, the union office, and some other places in the company ablaze, while lots of cars belonging to the company had their windscreens destroyed by the protester.
As if that was not enough, the youth marched to the administration block, destroyed air conditioners ransacked some of the offices, and destroyed other things.
In a memo signed by the company’s General Manager and cited by wrreporters.com, ‘all operational and administrative sites of the Bogoso Prestea Mine have been and will remain closed temporarily until the security situation improves, at which time employees will be advised to return to work’.
This is to enable management, together with regulatory bodies, to assess the damage to the site and ensure that the working environment is safe and secure to continue operations.
Management advised ‘all employees to adhere to the advised security protocols, which include staying at home or in your accommodation, avoiding Dumasi township and not using the main Bogoso-Prestea road’.
The memo added that ‘we are determined not to let the destructive actions of a minority interfere with our commitment to developing a trusting relationship with the wider community. It should be noted that yesterday evening we sent a letter to the leadership of Dumasi community outlining our willingness to commit to open dialogue and delivery of social investment projects’.
